The early history of Presbyterianism here is uncertain. There was a congregation in 1659 ministered to by Rev. William Moorcroft of Ardstraw. In 1672 the Rev. John Rowat was in charge here and at Old Cappagh which is several miles up-river from Mountjoy. According to the minutes of the Laggan Presbytery he was the only minister for many miles around Omagh. Mr. Rowat was one of the eight Presbyterian ministers in Derry City during the Seige. Who succeeded him is not clear but on 26 July 1710, Mr Alexander McCracken (lic. Derry) was ordained; he died on 8 Sep. 1743. He was followed by Mr. Hugh McCracken (lic. Strabane) his son, who was ordained on 4 June 1751 and resigned prior to 1766. He lived at Carrickfergus [Co. Antrim] and in 1774 he appears to have been deposed by the Presbytery of Templepatrick for officiating irregularly at marriage.
In 1768 the Rev. Joseph Coulter (lic. Monaghan) was minister. He is remembered as the minister who overturned the drinking booths that were set up on the meeting house green on Communion Sabbaths. He died in March 1789. His successor was Mr. William Dunlop, who was born at Limavady [Co. Londonderry] and ordained here on 15 March 1790. He was a warm friend of the United Irishmen and ran great risks for that cause. In 1798 he removed to Strabane and died 24 Nov. 1821. Mr. Charles Hemphill, a member of the congregation was next, ordained on 21 Feb. 1799 and had a long ministry until he died on 13 Jan. 1844. Before his death, Mr. Thomas Johnston (lic. Rathfriland) [Co. Down] was ordained as his successor on 15 June 1843 and under his guidance a new church was built on the same site as the old one in the townland of Droit in the Parish of Lower Badoney. To the cost of this, Mr. Daniel O’Connell, the famous Irish politician was a contributor. Mr Johnston died on 1 Sep. 1875.
The next minister, Mr. John Boyd, from Ballymoney [Co. Antrim], a former Covenanter, was ordained on 19 Jan. 1876. He was called to Portaferry [Co. Down] in Sept. 1880 and installed there on 21 Dec. 1880. A new manse was built during his ministry (1877).
The Rev. Jackson McFadden came originally from Bovevagh [Co. Londonderry] but was called here from Ringsend [Co. Londonderry] and installed on 31 May 1881. Mr McFadden had a keen discernment and balanced judgement which made him a valued member of the Judicial Commission for many years. To get his family of five sons and four daughters educated, Mr McFadden took a house in Belfast so that they could attend schools there, and they earned distinction at home and abroad. His sons achieved success in the ministry, medicine and law. His son Rev. Jackson Louden McFadden was minister of Kirkmaiden Parish, Wigtownshire [Scotland]. Mr McFadden Sen., died in May 1938. It was during his ministry in 1884 that Badoney and Corrick were united.
