Tuesday September 27, 1836 NEW ACT OF PARLIAMENT RELATING TO DRUNKARDS, AND TO HOUSES FOR THE SALE OF SPIRITS AND BEER IN IRELAND. A Vestry was held in the Church of Strabane yesterday, at twelve o’clock, pursuant to notice, for the purpose of appointing Overseers of Persons, and Houses in which Spirits or Beer shall be sold, within this Parish, under the Act 6 and 7th Wm. 4 cap 38. Messrs. ANDREW DONNELL and JOSEPH HENDERSON, Church Wardens, presided; and the following persons were appointed Overseers for this Parish: GEORGE McCARTER, Strabane WILLIAM RAMSAY, Strabane ANDREW BLAIR, Strabane PATRICK DILLON, Strabane JOHN WILSON, Strabane THOMAS WATSON, Strabane WALTER SCOTT, Strabane JOHN COOK, Strabane JOHN GILL, Strabane H. HAMILTON, sen., Strabane H. COOLAHAN, Strabane JOHN KYLE, Strabane JOHN McGURK, Strabane JAMES GRAHAM, Strabane SAMUEL MORTON, Strabane FRANCIS O’BRIEN jun., Strabane OLIVER BOND, Liskey, SAMUEL DONNELL, Calhame, JOHN FULTON, Edymore JOHN REILLY, Carrigullen The Duty of Overseers is to arrest all drunken persons, and to enforce the provisions of the Act of Parliament relating to Houses of Sale of Spirits and Beer by Retail; for which purpose the Act invests every Overseer with the same authority as the Chief Constable of Police; and a penalty of One Pound is imposed on any Overseer failing to act. |
