The system of the Presbyterian Church government has the meaning "rule by elders.". Ruling elders are the 'lay' people who have been elected locally and ordained to office. There is also a "teaching elder'- the Minister who is trained full-time for his work. Together- these elders form the "Kirk" session, which is the controlling body with specific powers in spiritual matters. The 'Committee" is different, in that their purpose is the material, financial and overall upkeep of the congregations property. Each "congregation" is represented at a "presbytery", a group of congregations, in a very defined area. The elder and the minister are those who attend the presbytery. The church is also under the rule of the "Synod"- a group of presbyteries, and the highest ruling body is the General Assembly. The first Presbtery meeting in Ulster, was held 10 June 1642 at Carrickfergus, by 5 ministers and 4 elders. During the 17th C many ministers were arrested and there was a fine of £100 if the Lords Supper was celebrated. Many Presbyterian places of worship were built a mile outside of a town or village. This is because the law forbade them to practise their religion and prevented them from building near a settled community. First Castlederg at Garvetagh is an example of this. Dissenter is another name for Presbyterianism.

- The town of Castlederg (or Derg ) was originally called Churchtown,
- The Castle was built in 1619
- Drumquin was originally called Kirlish
-The 1st 2 presby. churches in the area were Ardstraw founded before 1656 and Urney dating back to 1654
- The first minister of Derg was Mr John Dunlop (or Delap) ordained 15 Dec 1710 he died 29 Nov 1713
- The test act of 1704 (barring presbyterians from civil and military office) A drought in 1717, and famines in 1728 and 1740 were causes of large emigration to America
