eulogiums have been so often the vehicles of the personal
partialities of the writer of them, that readers are sometimes
disposed to pass them over, very cursorily, as the effusions of
biased friendship, perhaps of purchased praise. But the meek and
modest individual, whose death is above announced, stands in no need
of laboured panegyric, to sound her merits; her life was blameless,
as her habits were unassuming; and she carried with her to the grave
the unfeigned regrets of all who had an opportunity of cultivating
an intimacy with her. The private virtues as they endeared her to
her friends, so (actuated by her lively faith) they could not fail
to secure the approbation of her God, and this conviction must
greatly avail to alleviate the heavy affliction of a fond and tender
husband, and affectionate family, who now lament their loss in tears
of bitterness and woe

last, ROBERT VALENTINE GWYNNE, second son of MR. RICHARD GWYNNE, of
this town [Strabane], at the early age of nine years. - “In the
morning it is green and groweth up: but in the evening it is cut
down, dried up, and withered.”
Seldom have we witnessed lowered into the narrow
house a child more generally or deservedly regretted - as was fully
testified by the number of his companions and others who accompanied
his remains to the grave. This reminds us of the awful truth, that
“in the midst of life we are in death”, and that in this world our
days are as grass and of short duration. We know not the day nor the
hour when the withering grasp of death may seize upon us - when the
thread of life may be torn asunder, nor when that voice will call
upon us to come and give an account of the deeds done in the body: -
for “man cometh up as a flower, and is cut down; he fleeth as it
were a shadow, and continueth not.”
Pause here and think: a monitory rhyme
Demands one moment of thy fleeting time
Consult life’s silent clock, thy bounding vein;
Seems it to say - ‘Health here has long to reign?
Hast thou the vigour of thy youth? An eye
That beams delight? a heart untaught to sigh?

SIMMISON. We are sorry to state, that a young
man of the name of JAMES SIMMISON, from Edymore, near this town
[Strabane], went into the river at Derry to bathe, on Wednesday
last, and not being a swimmer, he was carried away by the tide and
drowned. The parents of the young man were in Derry waiting for the
sailing of a vessel for America, in which he was to accompany them;
what must have been their feelings, when the vessel sailed next day
with them, leaving their son still in the river. His body was found
on Saturday, a short distance from where he was drowned, and was
yesterday interred in the grave-yard of this town. He was a young
man of good character, and much respected by those who knew him

the strictest piety - In the course of his academical studies of
five years, he had repeatedly obtained the highest literary honours
of the College; he had for the last and current year, from his
regularity and respectability, filled a situation with the greatest
trust and confidence, which he discharged with every attention and
satisfaction, quitting this life deeply lamented by the Superiors
and Professors of the College, his fellow students, and by all who
had the pleasure of his acquaintance. To compress much in little, he
was truly the Christian, the Scholar, and the Gentleman

illness with fortitude and resignation, and died a witness of the
doctrine he preached, “Justification by Faith in Christ Jesus, and
hopeful of Immortality”

words, suffice it to say, that he was a most dutiful son, an
affectionate brother, a warm hearted and steady friend, and a kind
benefactor to the poor ---
His disconsolate parents are much consoled with the
hope, that as he lived a life of faith on his Redeemer he is now
enjoying that “rest which remaineth for the people of God.’ The very
numerous assemblage of persons of all ranks, who accompanied his
remains to the grave, plainly evinced the high esteem in which this
much lamented youth was held

COWAN. In the humbler walks of life, alike
unknowing and unknown are frequently found the humble followers of a
lowly master, the disciples of him who was despised and rejected of
men. In the life of MR. CHRISTOPHER COWAN of this town [Strabane],
who deceased on Tuesday the 8th instant the principal graces that
adorn the christian were strikingly exemplified; the most prominent
feature of his character was that which the Redeemer appointed to be
the distinguishing badge of his disciples, love, and as he advanced
in the divine life, in years and in experience, he proportionably
advanced in humility. For the greater part of his life he was a
leader in the Methodist Society, and in this capacity his manner of
advising, reproving, exhorting, or comforting, was eminently
calculated to produce the desired end; where many failed he was
successful in compelling the conscience of the person reproved, to
aid the effect of admonition. Those who knew him intimately testify,
that “his conversation was in heaven”; he delighted in private
prayer, and when time and place were not favourable to retirement,
his mind was evidently occupied with devout aspirations. That
cheerfulness which is the concomitant of a mind at ease was
constantly visible in his countenance; his long severe affliction
produced no moroseness, irascibility, or peevishment; he could still
“rejoice with them that rejoice” as when in health and spirits, he
was always ready to “weep with them that weep.” As his life did
“adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” we have no
hesitation in stating, that he for many years professed the
enjoyment of sanctification, thus affording an additional witness to
the sublime truths of the glorious Gospel: and as he “held fast
whereunto he had attained” there is, thanks be to God for his
unspeakable gift, no room for doubt, that he has laid hold on
eternal life. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his
Saints;” in his death the Church militant has sustained a loss, let
it be the prayer of all who love Zion, that in his stead may be
raised many such living witnesses of the faithfulness of God, and
the realities of Scriptural religion

had a fair prospect of realising a fortune, had he not fallen a

BROWN. On the morning of Wednesday last, after
an illness of about ten days, MR. ROBERT BROWN, of this town
[Strabane], grocer, at the age of 64.
Seldom, indeed, has it fallen to our lot, to record
the death of an individual so generally and deservedly regretted as
Mr Brown. A residence of upwards of thirty years in Strabane had
given to its inhabitants ample means of estimating his character. To
represent him merely as a truly honest man, a kind and obliging
neighbour, a safe, social, and intelligent companion, would only be
doing that which is admitted by all who knew him. But, superadded to
these qualities, he possessed a mind strongly imbued with the
highest principles of honour and independence, and ever treated with
their merited contempt, those fawning and time-serving dispositions,
so much employed in the present day, in the acquisition of wealth.
He, not withstanding, realised a considerable fortune, which, with
his unsullied character, has descended to his immediate relatives,
in this neighbourhood. Mr Brown’s piety was of the most unaffected
description, and being of the Presbyterian Church, was scrupulously
attentive to her ordinances and discipline. In support of our
charitable institutions, he always gave a willing contribution; and
no man ever felt greater pleasure in administering assistance to
objects of virtuous poverty. During his last illness, he evidenced
much genuine piety, making the merits and intercession of the
Saviour his entire ground of hope --- he suffered little or no pain
throughout, and closed his mortal existence without a struggle -
thereby forcing the application of the text, “Mark the perfect man,
and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace.”

DEATH OF THE REV. STEWART HAMILTON
HAMILTON. Seldom indeed has it fallen to our lot to
record with more heartfelt sorrow and regret, the death of an
individual, than that of the REV. STEWART HAMILTON. This amiable
character closed his earthly scene on the morning of Thursday last.
On Wednesday night, at his usual hour, he retired to rest, in
perfect health, and melancholy to relate, was found next morning,
“wrapped in all the darkness of death!” and without the slightest
appearance of having had a struggle in dissolution --- thus
proclaiming to all in language not to be forgotten - “Be still, and
know that I am God;” and that, “in the midst of life, we are in
death;” that “man cometh up as a flower, and is cut down - he
fleeth, as it were a shadow, and continueth not, even in one stay,”
and “seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are
with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass.” To
do but common justice to the character of him who is now the “tenant
of the narrow house,” would be a task, which we would only fail in
completing. He was always found to possess those principles of good
feeling to his fellow-man which endeared him to all; and fully
showed through life, that he forgot not the mandate of his Redeemer,
“to love thy neighbour as thyself.” To the charitable institutions
of the country, he proved his sincerity in God’s work by constant
contribution. In his capacity, as a Christian Minister, he has laid
an example to those who may come after him, by his personal piety
and good works, visiting the afflicted and the dying, and like John,
unceasing in his exertions when in attendance on the sick bed, in
pointing out the sinner’s hope, the rock of salvation, “the Lamb of
God which taketh away the sins of the World.” And here we would
refer to his unwearied exertions during the late pestilence. To
every house, to every hut, where it raged, he became a constant
visitor, and “studied to shew himself approved unto God, a workman
who needeth not to be ashamed.” For a period of upwards of
twenty-eight years in this parish, he proved himself the “widow’s
stay and orphan’s shield.” His private donations to the poor were
considerable; and he always studied to instil into the minds of
youth that knowledge “which maketh wise unto salvation.” At the age
of 62 years, did our Reverend Pastor complete the days appointed to
him here below, and his death marked by signs of having called upon
his God, “Let me live the life of the righteous, and let my latter
end be like his.” ---
To say what we could to do justice to his character
and conduct through life, becomes a duty we cannot fulfil; but will
conclude in the words of Divine Revelation:
“Blessed
are the dead which die in the Lord: even so saith the Spirit, for
they rest from their labours and their works do follow them.”

years. In few instances have the power of divine grace been more
strikingly exemplified than in that of the amiable young lady whose
death we now record. Long suffering under an illness peculiarly
severe, she endured the chastisement of an Almighty Father’s hand
without a murmur - in her, patience had its perfect work, her soul
becoming hourly more conformed to the Redeemer’s image as she
approached the confines of the eternal world. Having her confidence
placed on the Rock of Ages she meekly resigned her soul to him who
gave it, leaving to her mourning relatives, “a sure and certain
hope” that she has been taken from the pains and conflicts of this
transitory scene to the enjoyment of an exceeding - an eternal
weight of glory, in her Father’s house above.
Thou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore
thee,
Though sorrow and darkness encompass the tomb,
For thy Saviour hath passed through its portals
before thee,
And the light of his love was thy guide through the
gloom

HENDRICK. In this town [Strabane] on the 27th
July last, WILLIAM HENDRICK, ESQ., superannuated officer of Excise
(and father of ASSISTANT SURGEON HENDRICK, of the 34th Regiment, who
when quartered in Galway from his zeal and usefulness, during the
time Cholera prevailed, received the thanks of the Inhabitants
accompanied with a handsome piece of Plate previous to his going to
British America, where the Regiment is now stationed.) The late Mr
Hendrick was a kind Husband and an indulgent Parent, a warm friend,
and a humane man; whilst the oppressive law was in force of fining
Townlands £50 or £25 for each Still, Head, and Worm, found on them,
by which the innocent suffered for the guilty, and the Officers of
the Revenue in general realised large sums of money, he was never
known to exceed his duty, or make money by oppressing the people,
and although in his youth, the Ministers of his Church to often
neglected to impress upon their hearers the “one thing needful”
namely, Salvation through Christ alone, yet we trust all his sins
have been washed away by the atoning blood of his Saviour. And that
he will be found among the number of them to whom the Redeemer when
he cometh shall say “Well done, good and faithful servant enter thou

To a mind highly cultivated and stored with varied and useful
knowledge, he added every virtue that adorns the Christian.
Gratitude to God, and resignation to the Divine will, were the most

&c. being universally appreciated, while, at the same time, a breach
has been made in the circle of his acquaintance, which will not be
easily filled.
His relations, too, have felt a severe wound, which
time alone can heal; but, if the sympathy of others, and the high
estimation in which their departed friend was held, can alleviate
their grief, they have much consolation for their sorrow...

affliction. He now reposes in the bosom of that Almighty Saviour, in
whom alone, his best hopes were founded, where the bitter cup of
death is forgotten, in the fullness of that glory “which eye hath

ORR. On Friday last, after a protracted
illness which he bore with much resignation, WILLIAM ORR, ESQ., aged
50 years. Seldom, indeed, have we had occasion to record the death
of an individual, so generally and deservedly esteemed as Mr. Orr.
The inhabitants of this town [Strabane], as a mark of their respect,
closed their shops and suspended every kind of business until after
the funeral which took place yesterday morning at Ten o’clock. His
remains were followed to the grave by all the respectable people in
the town and neighbourhood.
Cut off in the prime of life, and midst of
usefulness, the removal of Mr Orr will long be felt in Strabane --
His extensive property (particularly in the town)
gave him great influence, and that influence he invariably and
promptly exercised in promoting every useful and benevolent object.
He was an indulgent Landlord, a sincere and unostentatious friend,
and his general disposition was characterized by integrity,
independence, and generosity

K.C.L.L.D. a lawyer whose eminence was long known throughout the
North West circuit. On Thursday the remains of this estimable Lady
(accompanied by a large assemblage of friends of all denominations,
anxious to pay this melancholy tribute to departed worth), were
interred in the churchyard of the latter town in the grave of her
husband. It may be truly said, in her were united the genuine, but
ostentatious, graces of Christianity -- she lived the life, as she
died the death, of the righteous, relying on the alone atonement of
her Redeemer. In the various relations of wife, mother, friend and
acquaintance, few could excel her in goodness of heart or amiability
of character

DEATH OF JAMES HAMILTON, ESQ.
It is our melancholy duty to announce the death of
JAMES HAMILTON, ESQ., which occurred at his residence in this town
[Strabane], on Friday last, after a protracted illness, in the 67th
year of his age. During his long life, which was almost constantly
spent in this neighbourhood, he distinguished himself by acts of
liberality, and attention to the necessities of the poor, who have
in his death to deplore the loss of a generous and kind benefactor.
his conduct as a Magistrate of the Counties of Tyrone and Donegal,
which situation he filled for many years, was distinguished by the
strictest impartiality and kindness of demeanour. We have seldom
seen a larger concourse of the gentry and merchants of this town and
neighbourhood than assembled yesterday morning to pay the last sad
tribute of respect to the memory of this lamented Gentleman. His
remains were interred in the family vault of this town.

GORMLY. An inquest was held at Newtownstewart,
before the Coroner MR. ORR, on Friday the 22rd ult., on the body of
MARY GORMLY which was found in the river near the town of Strabane.
It appeared that the deceased had been in company with her husband,
at the fair of Cranag, at Plumbridge, and returning home, tried to
cross the Glenelly River, when they were swept away by the current.
The body of the husband was found four miles below the ford. They
had been married only a few weeks. It is a remarkable coincidence
that the aunt of the woman, and the uncle of the man, man and wife,
were drowned 25 years ago at the same ford, under similar
circumstances
